Oliver's Workstation and Gen Y Workspace Design

Hello all - Oliver here!

I was in the process of cleaning my workstation (we have company coming over!) and started to realize how perfect it is for the way I work. I am quite spoiled, working at Cinncinnati's most innovative interior branding company, RJE Business Interiors Cincinnati (plug plug). I wanted to highlight the elements that make my workstation awesome:
  • Low panel height - the ultimate height of my workstation is 50". This allows for seated privacy (you can see the top of my head) yet the ability to collaborate with my colleague who sits across from me (furniture legend, Ron Shelander). The WarpKnit screens (those mesh panels above the fabric panels) allow lots of sound to come through, though permit visual privacy. We call it the confessional. For all you furniture junkies out there, the station is Knoll Dividends 120 degree, 42" fabric panels with a 15" WarpKnit stacker.
  • Management of technology -  I use a laptop with a second, 20" widescreen monitor (a debranded HP from Woot.com, for all of you tech junkies). My workstation incorporates a worksurface power module mounted so that I don't have to fool around underneath the desk plugging in everyday. You might notice some spaghetti down there but it's for good reason - [ProTip] it's a second power supply for my computer so I don't have to unpack and unwrap my adaptor each day. It also allows me to plug in my various electronic devices for recharging. Holding my monitor so gracefully is the Sapper Monitor Arm. This piece is very cost effective and flexible, allowing for masts up to 32" high (mine is an 18" model). It allows me to bring the monitor down to a reasonable level, enabling an easier dual-monitor setup.
  • Personal Storage - See that tower thing on the right side of my workstation? It incorporates a side bookcase, a personal drawer, two file drawers, and a wardrobe. We're seeing a lot of need for personal storage (vs. file storage) in today's workplace. Mine holds the 3 binders I need and lots of cans of soup.
  • Ergonomic Seating - Notice how I said "seating" and not "chair"? Yes, I get some funky looks in the office but it's worth it. I sit on the VIA Swopper and it's pretty much the equivalent of an exercise ball that doesn't roll around. It has a springy bounce to it and it pivots side to side. You definitively need to "work into" sitting on this thing (you use a lot of different muscles), but it's definitively worth it for the way I feel at the end of the day. I get up and sit down a lot, so the 360 degrees of usefulness is much appreciated (as well as the fun factor).

There you have it - my review of my workstation. What would I change? I would like more worksurface area (I'm working on it). As always feel free to shoot me an email or drop me a text (859-250-1638).
